Hannah Stimson is several years out of high school now, but she remembers well the feelings of self doubt and inequity around Prom time. The economics of buying a elegant aline prom dresses for less  and accessories are beyond the reach of many girls in Waldo county, where income levels are recorded as one of the lowest in the state. And though it might seem frivolous that teens would yearn for a Prom dress so badly, it is the need to fit in, to have one night where you feel equal to the rest of your classmates, that is so deep-seated for most teenagers. Prom Night is that night.

Despite her personal struggles, Hannah got involved with The Cinderella Project of Maine, an annual free giveaway, where new and gently used prom gowns and accessories are collected and given away to hundreds of high school girls who could not otherwise afford a gown. just thought it was really cool we were recycling them, Hannah said. was sort of a it forward project. As in years past, the gowns will be given away, with one stipulation must do a good deed for someone else. Hannah is the prime example of the it forward girl. Though she never even got to wear a Prom gown herself, she worked hard to promote the project on radio stations and help hundreds of girls go to their own Proms, feeling beautiful and self confident.

This year Prom dress give away will be 10am6pm at Renee Plaza in Belfast, Maine on April 10, 2010, thanks to the generous donation of space from Renee The day is always fun and fabulous when girls are trying on dresses, jewelry, and other accessories. Private dressing rooms will be available to try on gowns and volunteers will be on hand to serve as shoppers for girls as they coordinate their dresses, shoes, bags and beauty products.
